After more than two decades working in the beauty industry, I realized there was a growing disconnect between how beauty products are marketed and how consumers actually experience them.
I've spent my career viewing the beauty industry from nearly every angle. As a licensed aesthetician, makeup artist, and nail technician, I developed a deep understanding of skin health, nail care, cosmetic ingredients, product formulation, and professional treatments. As the owner of a successful salon and spa, I worked directly with clients, helping them address real skincare and nail concerns while building confidence through personalized recommendations tailored to their individual needs.
Later, as a college educator, I had the privilege of teaching future beauty professionals, emphasizing product knowledge, professional ethics, critical thinking, and evidence-based decision-making. As a beauty retail manager, I've spent years helping thousands of customers navigate one of the largest selections of beauty products available in Canada. During that time, I've worked closely with prestige, dermatologist-recommended, professional, indie, and mass-market brands from Canada and around the world. I've seen how products perform beyond the marketing campaigns, learned directly from brand educators and representatives, and watched countless innovations enter—and sometimes disappear from—the market.
A perspective rarely represented online
This combination of experiences has given me a perspective that is rarely represented online. I've seen products earn loyal followings because they genuinely deliver exceptional results. I've also seen products become overnight sensations because of clever marketing, celebrity endorsements, or viral social media trends—even when their performance didn't justify the hype.
Over the years, I've watched ingredient trends rise and fall, "miracle" products come and go, and marketing claims become increasingly difficult for consumers to navigate.
The average consumer deserves better.
That's why I created Beauty Beyond the Counter.
What this site is—and what it isn't
My goal isn't to tell you what to buy. My goal is to give you the knowledge, context, and honest evaluation you need to decide for yourself.
While I'm proud to be Canadian and will proudly feature Canadian beauty brands whenever possible, this isn't just a Canadian beauty blog. Great beauty products come from every corner of the world, and so does my experience working with them. You'll find a healthy balance of Canadian discoveries alongside internationally recognized brands, always evaluated using the same consistent standards, regardless of where they're made or how famous they are.
Whether a product costs CA$12 or CA$120, comes from a small Canadian company or a global luxury brand, it has to earn its recommendation.
Beauty Beyond the Counter exists to bridge the gap between marketing and reality by combining professional expertise with honest, transparent reviews that help people make smarter beauty decisions with confidence.
